Streetwear is a style of clothes that focuses on a casual, street look.
The History of Streetwear:
Streetwear was created on the streets of New York City. It came out of the hip hop culture that bloomed during the 70's and 80's. It was fused with elements of punk culture, like loose-fitting and do-it-yourself clothing choices. The style spread and was later influenced by the surfing culture of the late 80's and early 90's in Los Angeles. A surfer named Shawn Stussy sold surfboards with his logo and then expanded to selling t-shirts with his logo. This created a demand for his brand that expanded into the name recognition that is so important in today's streetwear. Streetwear was also influenced in the '90s by Japanese street style, taking elements like niche fashion and display trends. Soon, record labels got in on the fashion trend of streetwear by making limited edition t-shirts. In the 2000s, streetwear converged with bling fashion; high fashion brands and designers made partnerships with streetwear brands to create limited edition pieces that exploded in popularity. From the 2010s to the present, street style has focused on more comfortable sports style clothing and sneakers.
Elements of Streetwear Style:
Shoes: Shoes are one of the most important elements of streetwear. Streetwear shoes are usually brand name labeled and easily recognizable. Some of the more popular streetwear shoes are clunky leather boots that would be just as at home hiking through the mountains or working at a construction site. These shoes are practical and make a statement. Another popular choice is sneakers with a brand logo, name, or recognizable style. Often, streetwear sneakers purposefully contrast with the rest of the look to stand out. That's why bright white is a popular choice of color.
Hats: Streetwear hats are most often baseball caps with either curved or flat brims. Words or brand names displayed on the cap or brim are iconic.
Pants: Streetwear pants are often embellished with extra zippers, pockets, or other features. Cargo pants are a popular streetwear choice, usually in dark colors like black, grey, or forest green. Pants can also show off a brand name.
T-shirts: T-shirts are the backbone of street style, and they are one of the most basic parts of the look. Streetwear t-shirts are often from well-known brands or designers with trendy logos. Bands, franchises, or icons are popular graphic tees. They are usually worn loose and baggy.
